Finding The Right Side
Abraham Lincoln has been quoted as saying, "Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right."
The point here isn't to follow a mortal man -- even one of our most noted presidents -- but to look at God's infallible word serving as a base for this wisdom. Are we looking to be on God's side or thinking somehow our Creator and Savior will waver to our wishes?
Will He suddenly decide what is sin is actually now OK because the world thinks so? We can hardly find anything clearer than Hebrews 13:8, which says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."
If you find this disappointing or hopeless, you need to think again. Do we even need to be reminded of Jesus saying in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life"?
In James 1:17 we read, "Every good and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
God has been and always will be on our side. If it doesn't seem so, then we have strayed away from Him who sacrificed His Son for us.
That our Lord is immovable and does not change should be most comforting to us and encourage us to make sure we are on the right side. We should find great encouragement in Hebrews 13:5-6 -- "Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.' So, we may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?' "
The inspired writer to the Hebrews is reiterating Psalm 118:6 -- "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"
