Our Biggest Deal

Yes, I watched ESPN this afternoon as the NBA trade deadline ended. But no, I don’t remember who is on what team now after all the changes. After saying Kevin Durant is now with the Suns and Kyrie Irving is now a Maverick, I will struggle.

While I enjoy watching pro basketball, it is not necessary, and hopefully I keep it in perspective. You don’t have to be interested in it. Some of my sports fans friends don’t even like the NBA.

What is important - before and after today’s NBA trade deadline - is the greatest deal ever made when God sent his son to the earth to die and save us from our sins. First Corinthians 6:20 reminds us of that transaction -- “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

While Jesus paid the big price, we now must live up to our part of the deal as our Savior tells us in Luke 9:23-25 -- “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?

So trading any of our temporary possessions in this world for eternal salvation cannot be optional. Jesus said in Matthew 10:38, “And he who does not take up his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.”
